About Us

Eliana at age 1

The initial idea for a Portland L5R web-site actually arose from my feeble attempts to sell Magic cards on E-Bay to help pay for my daughter’s college education. Unfortunately, on any given day there are over 20,000 Magic auctions running at a time, compared to less than 500 L5R auctions. It was clear to me that Magic cards were not going to get Eliana into Harvard, and more importantly that daily L5R auctions would be a great way to fund our efforts to promote the game of L5R. That was the year 2006, and since that time, the Portland L5R team has grown to over 30 members, sold thousands of cards, and attended dozens of koteis. So on behalf of all the members of our team, and my daughter, I’d like to thank you for checking out our site, and I hope you will consider supporting our efforts.

If you are interested in become a member of the Portland L5R team, or writing articles for our blog, please contact Mike Petke at mdpetke@comcast.net.

    Hey Mike,

My name is Peter Smiglski. I live in the Tri-Cities, WA and have ordered many cards from you on ebay (under the the username sladreamer). I recently got your email regarding the tourney that will be in your area. I am very interested in coming over and playing in it and some of my buddies may come also I was wondering if you could tell me more about it, or if there was a website that had info about the tourney.
    Thanks a ton!

I was trying to find more info on the game and events held at Guardian Games. Unfortunately, I’m not seeing an email address or phone number of the judge or tournament organizer (Whatever it’s called for L5R). I’d just come on in at the specified time on the GG calendar but they’re really bad with keeping the calendar up-to-date and I’d rather not waste a long trip into Portland only to discover that it is in fact out-of-date. =/

Currently at Guardian Games, we meet on Tuesday nights from 5:30 to 8:30 for “free” play. Then we have a constructed tournament on Friday night starting at 6:00 pm (Cost $5)
Feel free to call or text me at 503-307-6195 to double check the schedule for that week.
This Friday we are actually just doing some play-testing and set-up for the Level 10 event on Saturday.

Is Tuesdays the best day to get a learning game in at Guardian Games? I see on their calendar that is the free play day.

Hello Mike. I’m writing here because Mailer Daemon bounced my email. I’m happy to report that the cards arrived Friday, February 24. I’ll be taking them out for their first game this Sunday.

No need to keep an eye out for Kan’ok’tichek Exp.2 and Akodo Tsudoken since I’ve got them already.

Thank you for a good transaction.

Do you know of anyone playing the L5R RPG? I would love to get into it but cant find much going on near portland regarding it:(

I’ve heard some good things about L5R and would like to give it a try, but I don’t know how to play (or know anyone who plays). I saw you used to put on some “learn to play” events down @ Guardian Games and wanted to drop you a line.

I was wondering if you are still doing these and if so when, where, and what I would need (ie: would I need to buy a precon deck before showing up or would there be a deck available to play to learn w/, is there a cost for your learn to play events, etc.).

Hope to hear from you, and maybe play w/ you some time :)

      Hi Jon,
You can show up Tuesdays around 5:30 or 6:00 for our learn to play night, and we’ll have some demo decks so you can try the game out.
Friday is our constructed tournament night from 6-10, but if you show up early, or are willing to stay late, you can probably pick up some fun games as well.
If you e-mail me at mdpetke@comcast.net, I can give you my phone # so we can coordinate via text if that works better for you.
      Looking forward to meeting you!
